Quickly becoming a St. Joseph tradition, “The Jewels of St. Joseph – A Showcase of Architectural Gems” annual tour of historic homes will be held for the fourth time, this year on Sunday September 22, 2019 from 10:00am until 5:00pm. This year’s tour includes 6 historic homes and 1 historic church in several neighborhoods. The wildly popular tour has sold out in the past, and this year appears to be no exception, as ticket sales already have been brisk. All proceeds benefit the non-profit Historic St. Joseph Foundation.

“We are absolutely thrilled that people are responding so quickly to this opportunity to view some of the finest architecture in the city,” said Isobel McGowan, owner of the Shakespeare Chateau, which will act as headquarters for the event. “We just hate to turn people away, so it’s great that people are planning ahead and getting their tickets early. But when they are gone, they’re gone – people will have to wait a whole year until the next tour is held.”

Tour homes are grouped in three historic neighborhoods: Hall Street, Museum Hill, and Krug Park, and tourists can visit the 7 locations in any order. “We are also including a ‘Diamond in the Rough’ location on the tour this year, so tourists will have an opportunity to see preservation in action!” said Lisa Rock, co-sponsor of the tour. “These historic homes are living historic artifacts, each one with unique character and hand-crafted details.”

“People say, ‘if walls could talk,’ laughed Kim Schutte, also a co-sponsor of the tour. “This tour will offer participants an opportunity to be inside these architectural treasures, talk to the owners, and really feel the history of the place. Who knows? Maybe those walls will inspire someone who comes on tour day to buy a treasure of his or her own!”

To help set the mood for touring these historic properties, many volunteers will be dressed in period costumes. There will also be a raffle to give tour participants a chance to take home some historic items from St. Joe.

The tour starts at the Shakespeare Chateau at 809 Hall Street. It also includes the Tootle Mansion, 802 Hall; the Browne-Craig home at 402 S. 12th; the G. Hax home at 417 S. 11th; the H.K.White home at 503 S. 11th; the H. Krug Jr. mansion 1105 Krug Park Place; and the First Baptist Church at 1225 Francis.

Advance tickets are just $20 per person. Tickets on tour day will be $25 – if any are still available! Call 816-232-2667 for more information or go to
