Hundreds of museums celebrate the American West (including more than a few east of the Mississippi). But True West magazine says the Pony Express National Museum of St. Joseph, MO, is one of the best.

In fact, the museum is #8 in True West’s Top 10 Western Museums of 2021. Western Spirit: Scottsdale’s Museum of the West, Scottsdale, AZ took top honors. The entire list of best museums is in True West’s September 2021 issue, on newsstands August 11.

“St. Joseph was the gateway to the West—for travel, settlement and communication,” says True West Executive Editor Bob Boze Bell. “The Pony Express Museum does a great job of telling the story of one of the iconic operations of the period. It is truly a top Western museum.”

Two-time Spur Award-winning writer Candy Moulton and the editors of True West selected the winners for this annual award based on extensive travels, research and firsthand experiences in visiting dozens of Western museums each year. Moulton cited the museum for its many exhibits. One highlights the young men who rode for the express service during its 18-month lifespan. But this is a story that still lives; each June modern-day riders carry the mail between St. Joe and Sacramento in a relay ride lasting ten days, just like their historic counterparts handled it.

True West magazine is in its 68th year of leading the way in presenting the true stories of Old West adventure, history, culture and preservation. For more information:
