Downtown is a bit more vibrant again, thanks to the annual Sculpture Walk.
The Sculpture Walk is a program of the Allied Arts Council that introduces contemporary outdoor public art and sculptures to our community. The Walk is a year-long exhibit of national, juried, outdoor sculptures displayed in Downtown St. Joseph and includes an eclectic mix of sculptures from artists nationwide.
There are 19 sculptures this year. A visual arts committee accepts applications and chooses which sculptures to use each year. Allied Arts Council purchases a sculpture each year to donate to the city for its permanent collection.
“The Sculpture Walk brings vitality, generates a public conversation about art, and gets the public engaged by soliciting their vote for their favorite sculpture. We are excited that we get to continue to bring this art installation to our community year after year,” said Hannah Kleopfer, Marketing Coordinator of Allied Arts Council.
The Allied Arts Council announced the 2019-2020 Sculpture Walk winners during their reception to kick off the new season June 14.
In first place was “Golden Dancer” by Darren Miller of Illinois. While on the tour, he explained the inspiration for this piece came from attending a jazz performance featuring an interpretive dancer. His sculpture is located outside of the Red Lion Hotel at the corner of 3rd and Felix streets.
Second place went to “UPLIFT” by Chris Itsell of Ohio, located on 6th and Felix Streets. His piece is inspired by the idea of energizing and lifting up one another, which he said reminded him of how the St. Joseph community is now coming together after the flooding.
Third place was awarded to “Gravitational Flux” by Jacob Burmood of Missouri, located at 8th and Felix Streets. He said that his process is inspired through new revelation given by constant natural forces that affect us all.
The People’s Choice Award voting will go on through January 31, 2020 and announced in February 2020. To participate and cast your vote for your favorite sculpture, pick up a brochure at one of the ballot boxes around downtown. For questions and more information, you may contact the Allied Arts Council at 816.233.0231, or stop by the office located at 118 S 8th St, St. Joseph, MO 64501.
The sculptures are owned by the artists and loaned to the Allied Arts Council for one year. Visitors are invited to vote for their favorite sculpture each year to determine the recipient of the People’s Choice Award.
The program is made possible through a partnership with the City of St. Joseph and financial support from the Downtown Community Improvement District, business sponsors and individual sponsors through the Friends of the Sculpture Walk.
All of the artwork on display is available for purchase. For more information, or to purchase a sculpture, please call the Allied Arts Council at 816-233-0231.
