Most people visit St. Joseph to see the historic architecture and visit the museums about wild west legends like the Pony Express and Jesse James. Others stop by just to grab a quick bite while on the road. Fortunately, Pronto Cafe is tailored to both. Located at 2501 Frederick Ave, Pronto Cafe gives visitors the unique opportunity to eat lunch in the home of the coroner who examined Jesse James’ body.

The Geiger Mansion connection
Pronto Cafe was built in 2015 as an annex to the Geiger Mansion, a massive, castle-like Gothic home which was built in 1911 by Dr. Jacob Geiger. Dr. Geiger had a long and colorful career. Starting off as one of the first doctors in the city, he gained a reputation for being a trusted figure in the medical world. Dr. Geiger is perhaps most notable for his work as the county coroner, in which he performed an autopsy on the body of the notorious outlaw, Jesse James, in 1882. He was also heavily involved in city politics until his death in 1934. This house was built in 1911 by legendary architect Edmond Jacques Eckel to serve as a home for Dr. Geiger and his family. In the 1970s, the house was converted into a bank before eventually becoming a set of law offices and the new Pronto Cafe.

What to expect inside
Today, Pronto Cafe serves a series of breakfast and lunch options. The atmosphere is very formal, with classic jazz playing in the background and a lovely outdoor patio for patrons to enjoy the nice weather. The place almost has a ‘Parisian bakery’ feel to it. If Pronto Cafe is known for anything, it has to be the sandwiches. Be it breakfast or lunch options, there’s no shortage of options for people to choose from. Other notable options include their handmade cinnamon rolls, salads, coffee options, their hot chocolate, and mango smoothies. Inside the restaurant, there are countless photos of St. Joseph’s most famous residents. Notable actors, politicians, artists, musicians, architects, pioneers, and everyone else who have made St. Joseph special are accounted for. A few of these photos, such as Eminem’s photo, are autographed. Pronto Cafe is a great option for people looking to engage with St. Joseph’s history, as well as anyone who has time to spare for lunch.
