Fort Smith Park
Fort Smith, named after Colonel Robert F. Smith, was erected in late September 1861 as a safeguard against conflicting armies battling on either side of the state line. With the strong possibility of battles reaching St. Joseph, Colonel Smith stood ready with his 2,500 troops and 12 cannon poised atop the newly created fortification on Prospect Hill. However the conflict was averted and by the spring of 1862, the Union troops at Fort Smith were downsized.
The fort was re-discovered in 2003. Amenities at Fort Smith Park include 3 full-scale authentic reproduction cannons, restored redoubts, a lookout point, period flags, informative signage, and an ordnance shed displaying illustrations of various types of artillery shells used in the conflict. The fort is a passive park, where visitors can come, relax, picnic and see a wonderful view of the city and beyond.
Fort Smith is open 9am – 5pm, 7 days a week, April 16th – October 14th. Closed October 15-April 15th.

Il Lazzarone Neapolitan Pizza
il Lazzarone (pronounced “lazzaˈroni”) is a family-owned pizzeria. The lazzaroni were the street folk of Naples. In fact, they were the ones who in essence invented pizza. It is said that when a lazzaroni had worked long enough to afford a Neapolitan pizza and a bottle of wine, he is done working for the day. The il lazzaroni embodied the true Italian spirit of relaxation and community which is what we try to do here. We pride ourselves on the highest quality ingredients and follows the law of traditional Neapolitan wood-fired pizza using only four simple ingredients in the dough and cooking the pizza in under 90 seconds. il Lazzarone is one of 77 locations in the entire United States with official certification. Chef Erik and Lesley Borger opened their first location on Frederick Avenue in March of 2014 and their second location in the Kansas City Rivermarket in March of 2015.

The MVIS allows those who work in Impressionism to paint and exhibit together and is one of the few organizations in the Midwest that embraces the method of painting en plein air, a method the Impressionists are able to call their own. The organization encourages, hosts, and sponsors plein air paint outs as well as en atelier sessions, workshops, and exhibitions throughout the year in various communities.
The Missouri Valley Impressionist Society is based in Kansas City, St. Joseph, MO, and Omaha, NE.

Jesse James Home Museum
Located around the corner from the Patee House Museum on 12th Street, the Jesse James Home is the location at which infamous outlaw Jesse James was shot and killed on April 3, 1882.
At age 34, James had been an outlaw almost half his life. He was shot by a fellow gang member, Bob Ford, to collect a $10,000 reward. The bullet entered behind his right ear and — some believe — came out over his left eye, leaving the legendary bullet hole.
The museum features artifacts from Jesse’s life and death, as well as those of Frank James and the Ford brothers. Also in the museum is evidence from the 1995 exhumation, which proved with 99.7% certainty that the person killed in this house was, in fact, Jesse James.

Lewis and Clark State Park
The Lewis and Clark Expedition headed west in 1804 and encountered a lake that William Clark described as “full of Geese & Goslings.” Today, that lake is Lewis and Clark Lake, which is bordered by Lewis and Clark State Park.
The park’s broad open spaces and easy water access make it a favorite for families who take advantage of the boat ramp and swimming beach. Bird watchers come to Lewis and Clark to watch geese, great blue herons and snowy egrets flock to the oxbow lake. Lewis and Clark State Park is dedicated to explorers Lewis & Clark, who visited the area on their epic westward journey. The 121 acre park has a shaded picnic area and shelter overlooking the lake.
Lovers Lane is a beautiful winding street immortalized by poet Eugene Field from the poem “Lovers Lane, Saint Jo.”
The site of many fine homes today, Lover’s Lane was a remote country lane when Eugene Field courted his futurewife, Julia Comstock in a horse and buggy. A monument on Lover’s Lane commemorates Eugene Field and is located at the interection of Northwest Parkway and Lovers Lane.
Lover’s Lane, St. Jo
by Eugene Field (1850-1895)
Saint Jo, Buchanan County,
Is leagues and leagues away;
And I sit in the gloom of this rented room,
And pine to be there to-day.
Yes, with London fog around me
And the bustling to and fro,
I am fretting to be across the sea
In Lover’s Lane, Saint Jo.
I would have a brown-eyed maiden
Go driving once again;
And I ‘d sing the song, as we snailed along,
That I sung to that maiden then:
I purposely say, “as we snailed along,”
For a proper horse goes slow
In those leafy aisles, where Cupid smiles,
In Lover’s Lane, Saint Jo.
From her boudoir in the alders
Would peep a lynx-eyed thrush,
And we ‘d hear her say, in a furtive way,
To the noisy cricket, “Hush!”
To think that the curious creature
Should crane her neck to know
The various things one says and sings
In Lover’s Lane, Saint Jo.
But the maples they should shield us
From the gossips of the place;
Nor should the sun, except by pun,
Profane the maiden’s face;
And the girl should do the driving,
For a fellow can’t, you know,
Unless he ‘s neglectful of what ‘s quite respectful
In Lover’s Lane, Saint Jo.
Ah! sweet the hours of springtime,
When the heart inclines to woo,
And it ‘s deemed all right for the callow wight
To do what he wants to do;
But cruel the age of winter,
When the way of the world says no
To the hoary men who would woo again
In Lover’s Lane, Saint Jo!
In the Union Bank of London
Are forty pounds or more,
Which I ‘m like to spend, ere the month shall end,
In an antiquarian store;
But I ‘d give it all, and gladly,
If for an hour or so
I could feel the grace of a distant place,—
Of Lover’s Lane, Saint Jo.
Let us sit awhile, beloved,
And dream of the good old days,—
Of the kindly shade which the maples made
Round the stanch but squeaky chaise;
With your head upon my shoulder,
And my arm about you so,
Though exiles, we shall seem to be
In Lover’s Lane, Saint Jo.

The Missouri Theater and the Missouri Theater Building adjoin each other in St. Joseph, Missouri. The Missouri Theater was built as a cinema in the atmospheric style, using a combination of Art Deco and Moorish detailing. The Missouri Theater Building was built as a companion, and both were completed in July 1927.
The Missouri Theater was designed by noted theater architects Boller Brothers of Kansas City, Missouri, with sculpture by Waylande Gregory. It was constructed by the Capital Building Company of Lincoln, Nebraska for local attorney and promoter Joseph Goldman. The theater has a single balcony that looks over a house designed to resemble an open tented courtyard, decorated with details borrowed from Assyrian and Persian architecture. While the theater was principally designed for movies, it could also be used for live performances, with dressing rooms, a fly loft and an orchestra pit. It also featured a Wurlitzer theater organ.
The Missouri Theater operated as a cinema until 1970. For the next few years it operated as a community theater, and was purchased by a community group in 1976. In 1978 the city of St. Joseph bought the theater for use as a performing arts center. The theater and office building were placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979. It is located in the St. Joseph’s Commerce and Banking Historic District.
The theater was renovated in 2002. A 1960s canopy was removed and the marquee was restored.

Tipple Hill Winery
Buchanan Counties First Winery! The tasting room is now open! Roxyann Schreiber & Ron Hayes are siblings who had a dream of working together to own and operate a winery. After visiting several Missouri wineries and observing the craft of wine-making, the relaxing atmosphere of a vineyard, the enjoyment of a high-quality wine and the simple charms of the business, we decided to pool our knowledge and resources into this venture.
Many people have asked us how we picked the name for our winery, here’s the simple answer. While researching our family ancestry I traced the “Hayes” family bloodline back to the 1700’s in England where our great, great, great, great Grandfather was a barkeep in a British pub. Tipple is a British slang word for alcoholic drink.
